Telemed Foundation is proud to announce the recipient of the Man of the Year Award for 2019: Best Actor Academy Award winner, Egyptian-american Mr. Rami Malek
Academy Award, Golden Globe, SAG and Emmy winning actor RAMI MALEK has won audiences over worldwide with his portrayal of Freddie Mercury in Fox’s Queen biopic BOHEMIAN RHAPSODY, which earned over $900 million at the box office. For his starring role he received an Academy Award®, SAG, BAFTA, and Golden Globe® for Best Actor in a Drama. The film also won a Golden Globe for Best Motion Picture Drama, in addition to receiving an Academy Award nomination for Best Picture.

Telemed Foundation conducted its first Grand Round remotely through telemedicine. Dr. Hisham Abdel Azim from USC School of Medicine and Dr. Mona Hamdy and her team from Abu el-Reesh Children’s Hospital in Cairo, Egypt were able to discuss a pediatric hematology/oncology case. Dr. Abdel Azim was able to share his expertise with his colleagues in Egypt.

Sir Magdi Yacoub is currently Professor of Cardiothoracic Surgery at the National Heart and Lung Institute, Imperial College London and Founder and Director of Research at the Harefield Heart Science Centre (Magdi Yacoub Institute) overseeing over 60 scientists and students in the areas of tissue engineering, myocardial regeneration, stem cell biology, end stage heart failure and transplant immunology. He is also Founder and Director of Magdi Yacoub Heart Foundation which has created the Aswan Heart Center. Aswan Heart Centre is dedicated to: 1) Offering state-of-the art medical services free of charge to all patients regardless of color, religion, or gender; 2) Training a generation of young Egyptian doctors, nurses, scientists, and technicians at the highest international standards; 3) Advancing basic science and applied research as an integral component of the program and promoting biomedical research in Egypt.
Professor Yacoub was born in Egypt and graduated from Cairo University Medical School in 1957, trained in London and held an Assistant Professorship at the University of Chicago. He is a former BHF Professor of Cardiothoracic Surgery for over 20 years and Consultant Cardiothoracic Surgeon at Harefield Hospital from 1969-2001 and Royal Brompton Hospital from 1986-2001. Professor Yacoub established the largest heart and lung transplantation programme in the world where more than 2,500 transplant operations have been performed. He has also developed novel operations for a number of complex congenital heart anomalies. He was knighted for his services to medicine and surgery in 1991, and awarded the Order of Merit by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II in the 2014 New Year’s Honours list. He has also been awarded Fellowship of the Academy of Medical Sciences in 1998 and Fellowship of The Royal Society in 1999. A lifetime outstanding achievement award in recognition of his contribution to medicine was presented to Professor Yacoub by the Secretary of State for Health in the same year. In March 2012 he was recognised as a Legend of Cardiovascular Medicine by the ACC and in October 2015 received the Lister Medal for his contribution to surgical science.
Research led by Professor Yacoub include tissue engineering heart valves, myocardial regeneration, novel left ventricular assist devices and wireless sensors with collaborations within Imperial College, nationally and internationally. He has also supervised over 18 higher degree (PhD/MD) students and published over 1,000 articles.
Sir Magdi has an active interest in global healthcare delivery with particular focus on developing programmes in Egypt, The Gulf Region, Mozambique, Ethiopia, Burundi and Jamaica. He is Founder and President of the Chain of Hope charity, treating children with correctable cardiac conditions from war-torn and developing countries and establishing training and research programmes in local cardiac units.

Overview of Achievements
Developed original operations for several complex heart conditions which include:
Transposition of the great arteries in babies.Double outlet right ventricle (Taussig Bing Anomaly).Single ventricle.Valve conserving operation for aneurysms of the ascending aorta including patients with Marfan’s syndrome.Mitral valve replacement using homograft or autograft aortic valve (the Top Hat operation).Mobilisation of the right and left fibrous trigones for sub-aortic stenosis.Trans-aortic repair of the syndrome of prolapsing aortic cusp and VSD.Total heart transplantation with bi-caval anastomosisEn-block double lung transplantation with revascularisation of the bronchial arteries.Valve conserving operation for aneurysm of the ascending aorta.
Established the largest heart and lung transplantation programme in the world. More than 2,500 transplant operations have been performed. Developed the Domino operation in combination with heart and lung transplantation. This is particularly useful for patients with pulmonary hypertension.
Developed a novel combination therapy utilising left ventricular assist devices and non-pharmacologic therapy to reverse end stage heart failure. This technique is expected to have a major impact on patients with severe heart failure and could act as an alternative to transplantation in approximately 40% of patients who require heart transplant.
Established the Harefield Heart Science Centre (now known as The Magdi Yacoub Institute) which acts as a base for over 60 scientists dedicated to research in heart disease at molecular and cellular levels as well as clinical research. The research is currently developing cell transplantation, gene therapy to the heart muscle as well as tissue engineering of a heart valve.
Established the Chain of Hope charity which is dedicated to the treatment of needy children in developing countries. The charity operates by sending missions to the countries concerned where children are treated in collaboration with the local centre. The Chain of Hope also helps to establish and/or equip new units to treat the children. In addition, the Chain of Hope brings children to the UK where they are treated free of charge and are hosted by local families. The Chain of Hope, in collaboration with The Magdi Yacoub Institute, are helping to establish a research institute in Mozambique dedicated to understanding, preventing and treating unique local heart diseases which affect children in Africa, such as endomyocardial fibrosis in addition to rheumatic fever.

C.V.Professor Sir Magdi Yacoub, FRS, OM
Sir Magdi Yacoub is currently Professor of Cardiothoracic Surgery at the National Heart and Lung Institute, Imperial College London and Founder and Director of Research at the Harefield Heart Science Centre (Magdi Yacoub Institute) overseeing over 60 scientists and students in the areas of tissue engineering, myocardial regeneration, stem cell biology, end stage heart failure and transplant immunology. He is also Founder and Director of Magdi Yacoub Heart Foundation which has created the Aswan Heart Center. Aswan Heart Centre is dedicated to: 1) Offering state-of-the art medical services free of charge to all patients regardless of color, religion, or gender; 2) Training a generation of young Egyptian doctors, nurses, scientists, and technicians at the highest international standards; 3) Advancing basic science and applied research as an integral component of the program and promoting biomedical research in Egypt.
Professor Yacoub was born in Egypt and graduated from Cairo University Medical School in 1957, trained in London and held an Assistant Professorship at the University of Chicago. He is a former BHF Professor of Cardiothoracic Surgery for over 20 years and Consultant Cardiothoracic Surgeon at Harefield Hospital from 1969-2001 and Royal Brompton Hospital from 1986-2001. Professor Yacoub established the largest heart and lung transplantation programme in the world where more than 2,500 transplant operations have been performed. He has also developed novel operations for a number of complex congenital heart anomalies. He was knighted for his services to medicine and surgery in 1991, and awarded the Order of Merit by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II in the 2014 New Year’s Honours list. Overview of Achievements
Developed original operations for several complex heart conditions which include:
Transposition of the great arteries in babies.Double outlet right ventricle (Taussig Bing Anomaly).Single ventricle.Valve conserving operation for aneurysms of the ascending aorta including patients with Marfan’s syndrome.Mitral valve replacement using homograft or autograft aortic valve (the Top Hat operation).Mobilisation of the right and left fibrous trigones for sub-aortic stenosis.Trans-aortic repair of the syndrome of prolapsing aortic cusp and VSD.Total heart transplantation with bi-caval anastomosisEn-block double lung transplantation with revascularisation of the bronchial arteries.Valve conserving operation for aneurysm of the ascending aorta.
Established the largest heart and lung transplantation programme in the world. More than 2,500 transplant operations have been performed. Developed the Domino operation in combination with heart and lung transplantation. This is particularly useful for patients with pulmonary hypertension.
Developed a novel combination therapy utilising left ventricular assist devices and non-pharmacologic therapy to reverse end stage heart failure. This technique is expected to have a major impact on patients with severe heart failure and could act as an alternative to transplantation in approximately 40% of patients who require heart transplant.
Established the Harefield Heart Science Centre (now known as The Magdi Yacoub Institute) which acts as a base for over 60 scientists dedicated to research in heart disease at molecular and cellular levels as well as clinical research. The research is currently developing cell transplantation, gene therapy to the heart muscle as well as tissue engineering of a heart valve.
Established the Chain of Hope charity which is dedicated to the treatment of needy children in developing countries. The charity operates by sending missions to the countries concerned where children are treated in collaboration with the local centre. The Chain of Hope also helps to establish and/or equip new units to treat the children. In addition, the Chain of Hope brings children to the UK where they are treated free of charge and are hosted by local families. The Chain of Hope, in collaboration with The Magdi Yacoub Institute, are helping to establish a research institute in Mozambique dedicated to understanding, preventing and treating unique local heart diseases which affect children in Africa, such as endomyocardial fibrosis in addition to rheumatic fever.
